Ljubljana starts you at the Mestna hiša, the old town hall just off the river, and the trail moves straight out into the surrounding streets. It crosses to Prešernov trg, then heads back towards the lower station of the funicular that runs up to Ljubljana Castle. This is a murder mystery walking tour you run at your own speed, with the centre as the search area.
The riverbank is level and the whole loop is short, which makes for easy going with children, with friends, as a couple or with colleagues, and it is equally workable for one player alone. Up to four people share a phone as a single team, so a larger group plays as two or three teams. Nothing starts at a set time and no guide walks ahead, which means a long stop on a bench in Park Zvezda costs you nothing.
Getting under way takes very little, and it all happens on your phone.
The case is the murder of Balthasar. Codes turn up to be broken, photographs have to be taken at particular corners, and digital characters give statements that pull in different directions. Around Levstikov trg and the Moderna galerija the evidence starts to settle, and each answer strikes a name off the list.
More than one team on the route turns it into a competition, which is what makes it a serviceable teambuilding activity as well as a day out. Stop for something to eat, take the trail up again, and finish the case in the streets of Ljubljana.
